The Slavonic Book of Esther: Text, Lexicon, Linguistic Analysis, Problems of Translation (Harvard Series in Ukrainian Studies) ReviewLunt and Taube do a very nice and a very thorough job of analyzing the Slavonic Book of Esther. This is not a book for an everyday reader -- but a person interested in textual criticism/analysis of the Bible, and an interest in and knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and Old Church Slavonic is bound to appreciate this book.
The premise for the analysis is based in the fact that most of the Old Church Slavonic (OCS) scriptures were translated from Greek manuscripts. However, in the case of the Book of Esther, the text is quite different from the Greek texts we know. Therefore Lunt and Taube hypothesize that the OCS version of Esther was translated from Hebrew Masoretic text (MSS). The objective of the book is to present evidence to support this hypothesis.
They first introduce the context and background of OCS language and then delve into anything and everything surrounding the Book of Esther in general. They look at its place in the Bible and its Greek versions.
The next section is a textual criticism of OCS Esther; manuscripts, context, redactions, editorial principles, variants, commentaries, etc. Next, they provide a parallel Russian translation of MSS and discuss the problems of translation, such as Hebraisms, mistranslations or influence of Hellenism, for example.
