The Hagiography of Kievan Rus (Harvard Library of Early Ukranian Literature, English Translations, Vol. 2) ReviewOne portion of the Harvard Project in Commemoration of the Millennium of Christianity in Rus'-Ukraine is the Harvard Library of Early Ukrainian Literature (the Library), which was carried out by the Ukrainian Research Institute of Harvard University with the financial support of the Ukrainian community.
The Hagiography of Kievan Rus' (the Hagiography) is distributed by Harvard University Press for The Ukrainian Research Institute of Harvard University, and is Volume II of the English Translations of the Library. The preparation of Volume II was made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent federal agency.
As background, within the Library, literary activity in Rus'-Ukraine from the mid-eleventh century (its beginning) through the end of the eighteenth century is discussed. Included are secular and ecclesiastical works written in various languages, such as Old Rus', Ruthenian (middle Ukrainian), Church Slavonic, Latin, and Polish. The cultural pluralism of Ukrainian intellectual activity in the medieval and early-modern periods is reflected by this linguistic diversity.
Three parts comprise the Library: 1) Texts, 2) English Translations, and 3) Ukrainian Translations. The Texts series is where original works are found; translations of original works are found in the other two series: English Translations series (this book, The Hagiography of Kievan Rus', is part of this series) and Ukrainian Translation series. Although forty volumes are planned for each of the series, they may be greater in number; within each series, the volumes are numbered and published in the order in which they were prepared. An introductory essay by a specialist begins each volume; in this case, The Hagiography not only has an informative Introduction by Paul Hollingsworth, but is also translated very aptly by him.
Both the translations and the introductions reflect the terminological and linguistic diversity of the original works. "Thus, for example, appellations such as the Rus', Rusija, Rossija, Mala Rossija, Malaja Rossija, Malorussija, Ruthenia, Malorussijskaja Ukrajina, Ukrajina, and so on, are presented according to their actual use in the given text. All of these terms have historically been used to designate 'Ukraine' or its parts. In addition, the word Ruthenian is employed to translate early-modern nomenclature for 'Ukrainian' and early-modern terminology describing common Ukrainian and Belorussian culture, language, and identity." Ukrainian and Belarussian cultural figures were active in a shared religious, social, and intellectual milieu for much of the period covered by the Library.
The Contents includes: List of Abbreviations; Introduction; Map (Eastern Europe: 11th-13th Century); Lesson concerning the Life and Murder of the Blessed Passion-Sufferers Boris and Gleb; Life of Feodosij; Tale and Passion and Encomium of the Holy Martyrs Boris and Gleb; Tale of the Miracles of the Holy Passion-Sufferers of Christ Roman and David; Life of Avraamij of Smolensk; Memorial and Encomium for Prince Volodimer of Rus'; Appendices (seven); Bibliography and Indices (four).
Albeit a cumulative index to the entire Library will be issued, each of the two translation series include a variety of indices. Volume II includes the following indices: Index of Biblical References (pgs. 249-252); Index of Greek Terms (pg. 253); Index of Slavonic Terms (pg. 255); and the Index of the Hagiography (pgs. 257-267).
The lengthy and informative Introduction by Paul Hollingsworth spans pages xiii-1xviii, and discusses each saint in social and historical contexts. The four sections within the Introduction include: I. The Cult of Boris and Gleb; II. The Life of Feodosij; III. The Life of Avraamij of Smolensk; and IV. Memorial and Encomium for Prince Volodimer. At the time of publication of The Hagiography of Kievan Rus', Paul Hollingsworth worked in the Political Section of the U.S. State Department, and was stationed in Moscow.
Deserving five stars plus for its informative and interesting depiction of the lives of the first Rus' saints as early Ukrainian literature is translated for the first time into English and in a single volume, The Hagiography of Kievan Rus' merits serious scrutiny.
