The essays are persuasively alert and helpfully alert us to what is alive in the language of translations, and the language of originals, for those of us who do not have the Greek or Latin to read them. Carne-Ross wears learning lightly, selects and discusses facts with discrimination and concision, and moves through eras, authors and single works with the graceful movement, sharp eye, and intimate tone of a guest at a party of his close friends--we are there as friends of Carne-Ross, as a friend of his friends, and yet made to feel at ease, offered a way into conversations with the authors and works, and provided with principles to allow us to carry them on our own, and inspired to continue doing so. Fine essays especially on the influence of Latin and Greek on English literature (how English authors write with "Latin jaws" or with "Greek jaws," making something new and living in English by means of a deep knowledge of the Classics), on Robert Fitzgerald as translator, on the shortcomings of Lattimore's Homer, on Modernist translations from H.D. to Lowell, and on Horace in English translation from the Renaissance to the present (originally published as the introduction to the Penguin anthology, "Horace in English"). The Index of classical authors is especially useful, allowing a reader to find very easily where Carne-Ross discusses a particular classical author or work by a given author, since many authors and works are scattered throughout the essays, sometimes appearing in more than one place.
