Stone Speaker: Medieval Tombs, Landscape, and Bosnian Identity in the Poetry of Mak Dizdar ReviewThis is actually two books in one jacket. The first is a brilliant study of the works of the Bosnian poet Mak Dizdar by Amila Buturovic, a professor of religion and humanities at York University. It is at the same time a literary criticism, a cultural biography, and an exploration of personal and social identity. It is a great introduction to Dizdar as well as a beautifully written study of Bosnian culture. It would be a much better introduction to the country, for somebody interested, than almost any of the books by journalists who were there during the war and that clutter the shelves of bookstores.
However what makes this book essential is that this is the first publication ever in the West, in English translation, of Mak Dizdar's seminal work Stone Sleeper (Kameni spavaè). The translation was a 20-year work of love by Francis R. Jones, and he describes, in a moving opening essay, the difficulty and rewards of the translation process. The Stone Sleeper text itself is reproduced in its entirety, with the English translation side-by-side. This is an beautiful way to read the text, whether or not one knows any Bosnian, and it is the heart and soul of this book.
One can't delve too far into Bosnia without coming across Mak Dizdar. Bosnians will tell you about Ivo Andriè and, even more so, Meša Selimovic when they recommend prose works about Bosnia by Bosnian authors. When they recommend poetry they mention Mak Dizdar.
