A Manager's Guide to Virtual Teams ReviewIt's a good thing too because it is the only such map of the virtual world out there today to my knowledge. This is truly an exceptional book on a surprisingly nuanced topic by Yael Zofi. She covers every aspect of virtual teams so clearly, concisely and comprehensively.
As a co-founder of Desktop Anywhere in 2001 I am a long time believer of the huge benefits and profound opportunities available to those who best leverage this new Digital World. I also know how challenging such a change is for businesses and the people behind them.
On the surface it might seem that moving to Virtual Teams is not so different than managing people pretty much like you do now. I can tell you from years of experience that this is not the case. Many of the same dynamics that are so critical to collaboration are highly amplified when you add the virtual element. Team dynamics like authenticity, credibility and trust need to be planted, farmed and harvested differently than teams physically together. Your results with virtual teams will reflect your preparation and execution and winging it is not a good strategy.
And Virtual Workers are "Green" too. The more we have our teams work effectively free from location constraints the less infrastructure, oil, electricity, office space, etc. that we will use. Work/life balance can be greatly improved too. There will even be less congestion on the highways.
This does not mean that going to virtual teams means sub par results. On the contrary, managed correctly, results can be significantly improved when the execution is correct. One of my favorite teams used Web meetings when we were in the same office just a wall away from each other. We found we could often get more done by each having our own computers and sharing screens when we needed as we worked together. It was surprisingly effective for us.
How can virtual teams improve results? Well, you need to buy the book to get more than just the glimpse I can deliver here.
I can tell you I was very comfortable that after more than a decade of working virtually with different teams, in every continent but Antarctica, for every size of organization, that I knew this terrain. I really thought I knew it well enough to operate without a handy checklist or road map. Reading this book changed my mind on that.
I not only am I going to read it again very soon, "A Manager's Guide to Virtual Teams" is going to the front of my bookshelf as a frequent reference guide. I know that I will improve the results of all my teams (most all of them are somewhat virtual now anyway really) whether a member or leader, by referring often to this fine book.
