The First Letter to the Corinthians (Pillar New Testament Commentary) ReviewIn my mind, this is the must-have commentary on 1 Corinthians. I had the privilege of studying under both these guys while at GCTS. You will be hard-pressed to find a better team than Rosner and Ciampa to take on 1 Corinthians. Already, Rosner is considered an expert in NT and especially Pauline Ethics, and of course, 1 Corinthians is perhaps the NT Epistle with the most ethical content. Ciampa, though not yet a household name, is as good as they come when we're talking about Biblical Studies. There's a reason why Gordon-Conwell has him in charge of the Biblical Theology ThM program, teaching OT in the NT, NT Interpretation, and a host of Epistle and Gospel courses. What you'll find here is not only a rigorously researched commentary, but one that also does a wonderful job of bridging the gap from what it meant to the original readers to it's contemporary significance. Both men are excellent communicators, really put in the work on hard/disputed passages, and have looked at every possible cross-reference (both Biblical as well as Greco-Roman and Jewish) in order to best understand each section, pericope, and sentence.
