If you have never read any works by these authors, you may want to at least work your way through some prior to tackling this book. Rest assured though that Tatum writes with a natural grace that will take you on a journey and illuminate passages from these authors that would be impossible to appreciate without someone like Tatum to guide you through. Cook's voice as the African American specialist comes through loud and clear - like Tatum, he was one of Dartmouth College's most revered professors for many years and his zeal for African American literature and scholarship is on display for all to see. Tatum is an eminent classicist, one of the foremost in the country - his readings of poems and passages in unsurpassed. Like Vergil in Dante's inferno, he takes us by the hand and guides us through not hell, but the complex language and classically based idiom of many great poems, books and shorter works by African American authors from Wheatley to Dove. The chapter on Tolson was probably the most complex of all, but then again, Tolson's poem is dense, opaque and almost unreadable without a guide. Tatum combines his impeccable knowledge of all things classical with music and art as well to make for a deeply satisfying, thought provoking and at times complex read. his writing is laser sharp and not at all pedantic, so mere mortals as well as scholars will appreciate the writing.
