The Oxford Handbook of Roman Studies (Oxford Handbooks) ReviewFirst off: This is a very expensive book at present. Yes, one can hope that they release a paperback at a more reasonable pricepoint. But it's still worth the cash if you know what you are getting into.
If you are a /serious/ Roman history buff or student this is an essential book to read and reference. Each of the 55 chapters (loosely organized into five sections) is an enlightening read, and cover everything from due diligence in recognizing the limits of the epigraphy to the current state-of-the-art research into Roman demographics. But the true value of the book lies not in the essays, as excellent as they are, it lies in the extensive - almost overwhelming if they were not broken out by chapter - bibliographies that follow each section. These give the reader an excellent look at the sources used in the most recent scholarship, and a jumping-off point for their own research on any of the particular topics discussed in the Handbook.
I cannot possibly recommend this book enough for serious use, but if you are just a casual reader of Roman history I do /not/ recommend this until you have digested a few of the more readable overviews of your subject of interest so you can get a grasp of the conflicting narratives and differences of opinion that the Handbook will help you place in context. The Oxford Handbook of Roman Studies (Oxford Handbooks) Overview
