Social Research Methods: Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches ReviewThis book is packed with information and practical advice, easy to read, and a great way to introduce a variety of methods to young scholars in an unintimidating way. The coverage of a wide range of methods would make this book a good addition to a survey course on methods in a graduate class in the social sciences.
Unlike the previous reviewer, I found this book to be very useful. Note that the writing style is unusual for a text book, and that seems to have turned the first reviewer off. The book is written from a feminist style, by which I mean that the author does not set us up to think that his opinion automatically superior or the only one out there. Shocking.
On many of the methodological issues addressed in the book, there is no "right" or "resolved" answer, and this author is honest about that. (If you want more assurance -- probably better for an undergraduate course -- see Babbie's books.) This book is written by a person. The person happens to have a great deal of research experience and has done readings upon readings besides... but he is still a person, not a text-book writing machine. That fact comes through in the text, and I find it more honest than usual and quite refreshing.
