Letters from a Life: The Selected Letters of Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976: Volume Five: 1958-1965 (Selected Letters of Britten) ReviewThis fifth volume of the magnificent biography based on and incorporating a selection of Britten's correspondence uses a method that allows him to speak in his own voice. As he matured into his middle age Britten was placed under huge demands as composer, performer, and arts administrator. He fell prey to periods of serious illness that placed tension on his professional role as accompanist to his life partner, the tenor Peter Pears. It was a time of rich creativity, with The Midsummer Night's Dream written at white heat with a libretto constructed by Britten and Pears together, as there was no time to involve a librettist. During this period Britten wrote one of his most important works, War Requiem, and its first performance at Coventry Cathedral was full of stress due to difficult acoustics and the refusal of the Soviet government to let the soprano soloist leave Russia. Britten wrote a cello repertoire at the inspiration of Rostropovich, and this volume covers the trip that he and Pears took to the Soviet Union and their friendship with Shostakovich and other Soviet musicians. Britten's contact with eastern music, especially the Japanese Noh plays, finally led to the significant musical and theatrical advance of Curlew River(in which Pears as the Madwoman gave one of his finest roles). At this time also, associates and even close friends fell from grace with Britten for personal (the Earl of Harewood) or professional (the publishers Boosey and Hawkes) reasons. This is a wonderful portrait with all its lights and shadows, and a significant addition to the history of twentieth century music.Letters from a Life: The Selected Letters of Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976: Volume Five: 1958-1965 (Selected Letters of Britten) Overview
