However, I can offer my opinion which is that this is an excellent study of a very complex time and place... . Mallette provides a lucid and detailed assessment of the origin, content, style, cultural interactions and overall quality of the literary efforts under the Norman conquerors. She is like a well informed, cordial, intellectually stimulating companion on a journey to a distant and formerly inaccessible country.
