Ecce Romani Level 1 ReviewAhh, the joys of the Ecce Romani series are inumerable. In high school, I took Latin I-III through a distance learning program that was run by Kentucky Educational Television. When my gifted teacher gave me the text book to look at over the summer before I had to take Latin I, I fell in love with the pedogical approach of this book. (Just as note, we ended up using this text for Latin I and the first part of Latin II.)
Although it can be time consuming, the Ecce Romani series teaches through an immersion in the language. It starts off with short stories using only basic conjugating and inflecting and builds up to teaching concepts fully. I find that it can take more time to learn the concepts because it doesn't overwhelm you with data which you must learn in one chapter to go to the next. However, after you learn vocabulary and grammar, it is cemented in your memory because you become immersed in translating from Latin, doing exercises, and even translating into Latin.
My only major "con" for this text is that if you want to learn rapidly, it is much more work due to its pedogogical style. I would suggest for an intense learning of Latin to buy John F. Collins' "Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin." The differences between Classical and Ecclesastical can be easily over come.
My suggestions: for individual study buy this book in the teacher's addition if you can. If not, you just won't be sure if you are correct in you exercises. (Also, try to find the corresponding workbooks).
If you need/want to learn more quickly OR have experience with inflected languages, look into something that is more compressed such as Collins' book mentioned above.Ecce Romani Level 1 Overview
