It is an arguable point, but there is no question that there are fundamental differences between the two gospel accounts, and by looking closely at the scene in the Garden of Gethsemane, Ruprecht is able to highlight those differences clearly- Mark is a "tragic" gospel, in the Greek sense, while the "evangel" of John (he does not consider it a "gospel" in the same sense as the other three) is specifically "anti-tragic."
He argues that the decision of the early church and of the later Protestant Reformation to value John over Mark had significant impacts on the shape of the Christian message and on the capacity of Christians for compassion. This book will be disdained by those who believe that the Gospels were divinely inspired in every word, and troubling for those who are attracted to the mystical elements of John.
