The One and the Many: Reading Isaiah Berlin Review2009 is the centennial year for Isaiah Berlin, as evidenced by the recent publication of "The Book of Isaiah: Personal Impressions of Isaiah Berlin" (also reviewed on Amazon). But as the subtitle of that volume indicates, it is primarily (but not exclusively by any means) devoted to the personal side of Berlin as seen by those who worked and interacted with him. While there is some focus on his substantive contributions, the primary goal was to present Berlin as a personality to those of us who never had any interaction with him. This volume, published in 2007, is just the opposite: its focus is almost exclusively on Berlin's areas of substantive work. Interestingly, some of the same individuals have contributed to both collections. As was the case with the more recent collection, this book is edited by Henry Hardy (along with George Crowder), who has been so instrumental in publishing 16 or so of Berlin's books, in the process dispelling definitively any suggestion that IB lacked gravitas because he had not published multiple tomes during his life. So we know we are in the best of hands.
The essays in the collection (by some 14 different authors) cover a variety of Berlin's multiple interests: Karl Mark; the Russian Intelligentsia; political thought; his concepts of liberty; the Enlightenment and Counter-enlightenment; the role of history; nationalism; and pluralism. There is also an interesting piece by Shlomo Avineri on Berlin as "A Jew and a Gentleman," which complements nicely his article in the more recent Berlin collection. The Appendix, entitled "Berlin's Universal Values--Core or Horizon?" is also of interest. The bibliography is not only extensive, but it is unique in that it summarizes the topics in Berlin's various books--quite unusual and extremely helpful. It also includes interviews and correspondence, books and essays on Berlin, and uncollected work and publications that are cited in the book. An extensive index rounds out the book's contents.
This all makes for a 300 page collection that is not only extremely interesting but highly valuable to boot. Quite an excellent package for those of us interested in this most fascinating individual and his manifold contributions to our better understanding.The One and the Many: Reading Isaiah Berlin Overview
