The Old English Heptateuch and Ælfric's Libellus de veteri testamento et novo: Volume I (Early English Text Society Original Series) ReviewThe Old English Heptateuch (Genesis to Judges) is the first stand alone translation of the Old Testament in English. It is a composite work possibly begun in the 9th century and completed by the early 11th cemtury and possibly earlier. The translation was made from the Latin text and several version were extant. It is invaluable for liguistic studies in English and for tracing the development of the language through its early stages.
This volume presents an updated and thoroughly researched text with all available sources consulted at the time of publication. It is thus, an ecclectic text with copious foonotes to see the variations in the various sources. About half the volume is devoted to introductions, praxis explanations, manuscript reviews and relationships, provenance discussions, reviews of previous editions, discussion about variation in the sources, etc. The book is woth it for this even before the actual text of the heptateuch is given. An indespensible tool of Old English Bible student.
The binding and print are durable and excellent, clarity is superb, including the Old English alphabet. Thoroughly recommended.
