Writing between the Lines: Portraits of Canadian Anglophone Translators ReviewA translation should preserve the source culture and linguistic style; a translation should be able to stand on its own as a work in the target language; a translator should be accurate and faithful; a translator should have freedom - the twelve translators profiled in Writing Between the Lines have a wide variety of opinions about their roles and the requirements of their jobs. It is interesting to read the in-depth biographies of these translators and to learn how they came to translation, how they viewed their work, and how their other careers - as professors, writers (poets, novelists, academics, journalists, and one pornographer), a lawyer, one mailman/mayor, and so forth - influenced their callings as translators. The overarching goal of this book, however, is not simply to analyze individual translators and their feelings about translation, but to, through these portraits, describe the modern history of translation in Canada. Unfortunately, it takes a limited approach to this. Writing Between the Lines repeatedly emphasizes the importance of communication and literary exchange, including translation, between Canada's anglophone and francophone communities, and the book rightfully claims that such exchange is only to the benefit of the bilingual country. And yet, the book only features anglophone translators; that is, each of the twelve men and women portrayed translates from French to English. Perhaps a companion volume on francophone translators is planned, or maybe for whatever reason the editor believed it best to only look at one side of the language divide at this time. But to truly represent the area "between the lines," francophone translators should be included.
In summary, Writing Between the Lines is a good book to read for those who are interested in learning about individual translators and their experiences, as well as about one-half of the modern history of translation in Canada. As the introduction states, this is the "first comprehensive, inside view of the practice of anglophone literary translation in Canada," and it is a useful and noteworthy work on those grounds. For a fuller picture, though, a "comprehensive, inside view" of francophone translation in Canada is also needed.
